Chocolate Skittles: the results!
This morning I was picking up my breakfast at the gas station when I came upon this oddity: Chocolate Skittles.
Were they chocolate-filled like an M&M, or were they like Jelly Bellys? I had to pay the $0.69 to find out.
The flavors include "S'mores", "Chocolate Pudding", "Chocolate Caramel", "Vanilla" and "Brownie Batter".
Now, immediately I began to question what Vanilla had to do with Chocolate, but then I really didn't care so I continued on.
All of the flavors seemed fairly well represented in the bag, except for "Chocolate Pudding" (which is not nearly as red as it appears on the bag. In fact it can be hard to distinguish from the Brownie Batter") and instead of the 12 that each other flavor had, it only had 6 in the bag.
• Smores: At first, its artificial flavor hits you. It's hard to distinguish from a Tootsie Roll, but a second or two later the buttery flavor and a "warmth" hits your tongue. The "Chococolate" is fairly subdued in the flavor and it reminds me more of a Jelly Belly's "Butter Popcorn" with a little bit of honey. It's not too bad, but just a few is more than enough for me.
• Chocolate Pudding: This is pretty much the "Chocolate" of the bag. It deffinately has that weighty chocolate taste with a slight "bite" that you get when eating pudding. It's still a bit buttery, but the flavor is fairly accurate, but not something I'd want to eat a lot of in a sitting.
• Chocolate Caramel: Seemingly a combination of "S'mores" and "Chocolate Pudding", this flavor does not have that intense chocolate taste and bitter sense to it that the "Chocolate Pudding" had, but doesn't come across quite as buttery as the "S'mores" either. I would probably eat more of these in a sitting than the other flavors. It's not overly intense and is fairly well-rounded for pleasurable eating.
• Vanilla: The odd-ball of the bag, I guess you've gotta have Vanilla with Chocolate (Equal Opportunity and all, I guess.) The flavor is again VERY buttery and the vanilla stands out. To be honest, this could be the base for most ofthe flavors in the bag, and it was easy to throw it in without mixing in the other flavors. It's not a bad candy and ranks with Chocolate Caramel for casual eating. (Note to self: Save some of these and try them with a regular bag of skittles to try those flavors WITH Vanilla!)
• Brownie Batter: Like chocolate Pudding, only with a bit more of an sharp warm flavor to it... perhaps a bit of a bitter or sour (can't really pick which) and salty flavor. If this was actually a brownie mix, it would probably be recalled. The taste is terrible to me and not something I would eat again (unless I really needed a sugar fix and that was the only thing left.) Not a very good flavor for my pallette.
Eating these flavors, it occurs to me that they had to do a mix bag because any one of these would be overwhelming. Unlike fruit-skittles, where the flavors of fruit are typically refreshing in taste, these flavors are heavy and dense. The taste of "butter" seems to be the base of them and so more like the dense dessert treat they were probably intended to be, rather than the crisp fruity taste of regular Skittles.
Would I buy these again? Probably not--unless I wanted them just for the "Vanilla" or "Chocolate Caramel" (didn't we used to call this Buttersotch back when I was a kid?).
